THLOG 1

While thinking about my thlog, where to write it and what to write about, I remembered something that came to my mind during our discussion of first order thinking! Interestingly enough, I had a pure moment of first order thinking while hearing my other classmates give examples of first order thinking. As soon as the idea popped into my head I raised my hand and gave my own example of first order thinking. To explain my example of this type of thinking I will first delve into a funny story that I witnessed a few years ago on the mean streets of Beverly Hills. As an Aston Martin driver took his sweet time to parallel park, all while blocking a whole lane of traffic during rush hour, a taxi cab driver lost his temper and decided to let the Aston driver know what exactly he was thinking. When the traffic seized momentarily and the taxi driver had the chance to evade the car blocking traffic while progressing forward, the cabbie rolled down his window, looked directly at the other driver and yelled, "F**K YOU B**CH, AND YO MOMMA!" After I witnessed this marvelous insult for the incompetent driver who could not parallel park, I realized that cursing someone out immediately after they do something to warrant that kind of language, is a prime example of first order thinking. While the curser quickly tries to find words to insult their foe, they need to think of something hurtful, original, and possibly funny to maximize the effect of their insult. In that time period, there is not enough time to think about what to say. First order thinking often produces greatness, as seen in Beverly Hills, although it may be unfiltered and raw, it is exactly what the mind thinks in that moment and is the most organic response.

About me

Hi! My name is Elliot Stanger and I'm from Culver City, an autonomous city in the heart of Los Angeles. I really like the city I'm from because it comes with a small town feel, but at the same time we are in the middle of one of the best cities in the whole world! I am a first year at UCSB and am currently a Pre-economics major. I also play lacrosse here at UCSB and we just came back from a trip to Colorado where we played the number four ranked team, Colorado Boulder (and won!) and we also faced off against the number nine ranked team, Colorado State(we lost in double overtime). While we were in Boulder, there was a snow storm which dropped a whole foot of snow on the ground! Other than lacrosse, I am a big sports fan. My father, who's from Boston, raised my brother and me to root for only Boston teams. Being from Los Angeles, it was a bit hard not rooting for Kobe as he was winning all those championships, but my dad taught me a valuable lesson that real fans stay with their teams. Other than sports, I like to surf, hang out with my friends and listen to music. I love all sorts of music from salsa to jazz. My favorite genre is rap and R&B and the Spotify Discover playlist has become one of my favorite things since I've bought my student discounted Spotify membership. In the future, I'd like to travel to as many places as I can, especially the Spanish speaking ones, as I am fluent in that language. I went to an immersion elementary school where each student picks Spanish or Japanese and learns in that language for their next five years in school. A lot of my friends from elementary school are actually planning a trip to Japan for this summer. I look forward to the Spring Quarter and this class as I am anxious to improve my writing!
